Prior to collecting a blood sample, a phlebotomist must check that the tools being used are sterile and single use only. Following the collection, the sample needs to be properly labeled with the patient’s information. Next, paperwork has to be properly filled out in order to track the sample from the point of collection through the lab testing process. The phlebotomist then transports the blood to either an an outside lab facility or an in-house lab where it may be screened for such things as pregnancy, infectious diseases or blood type. Some Stonefort IL phlebotomists in fact work in laboratories and are accountable for making sure that samples are analyzed properly under the highest quality control procedures. And if those weren’t enough responsibilities, they can be asked to instruct other phlebotomists in the collection, transport and follow-up process.

The easiest response is wherever they treat patients. Their workplaces are many and diverse, including Stonefort IL medical clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, or blood centers. They may be charged to draw blood samples from patients of all ages, from infants or toddlers to seniors. A number of phlebotomy techs, based on their training and their practice, specialize in drawing blood from a specific kind of patient. For instance, those working in an assisted living facility or nursing home would only be drawing blood from older patients. If they are practicing in a maternity ward, they would be collecting blood from newborns and mothers solely. This is especially true if you decide to still work while attending college. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Stonefort IL, make sure they are available at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure it is an option as well. And find out what the make-up policy is in case you have to miss any classes as a result of emergencies or illness.
