In the mid-19th century, a mill district developed at falls on the Mascoma River. Industries included, at various times, furniture mills, a tannery, several machine shops, a woolen textile mill and a clothing factory. In the mid-19th century, this district attracted many French workers from Canada's Quebec province. This became the center of town, although West Lebanon grew into a railroad hub with a separate identity after lines entered from Boston.     Stewartstown is a town in Coos County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,004 at the 2010 census.[1] It includes the village of West Stewartstown and is part of the Berlin, NH–VT Micropolitan Statistical Area.

    Stewartstown was granted in 1770 and incorporated in 1795. Originally named Stuart after Sir John Stuart, it was incorporated as Stewartstown after the Revolutionary War, following the original Scottish spelling of the name.[2]

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 46.8 square miles (121 km2), of which 46.2 square miles (120 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) is water, comprising 1.23% of the town.[3] The highest point is the summit of Sugar Hill, at 2,985 feet (910 m) above sea level, near the town's southeastern corner.

    The primary settlement in the town is the village of West Stewartstown on U.S. Route 3 along the Connecticut River, opposite the town of Canaan, Vermont. Stewartstown village is a mile northeast of West Stewartstown, along Route 3 and opposite the village of Beecher Falls, Vermont. To the east, the village of Stewartstown Hollow is closer to the geographic center of the town, along New Hampshire Route 145.

The buildings have now largely been converted to other uses.[citation needed] Much of Suncook's late 19th-century commercial village center has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Suncook was once home to the Suncook Valley Railroad, a shortline railroad company that operated northwest to Concord and northeast to Barnstead. The railroad operated on former Boston and Maine track that was sold to the company. The Suncook Valley Railroad went bankrupt in 1952 and all its track was torn up.

    Suncook is located in the southern corner of the town of Pembroke and the western end of the town of Allenstown. The Suncook River runs through the center of the village and forms the boundary between the two towns.     West Swanzey is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Swanzey within Cheshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,308 at the 2010 census.[1] It is the largest village in the town of Swanzey.

    West Swanzey is located in the west-central part of the town of Swanzey, on both sides of the Ashuelot River. The West Swanzey Covered Bridge carries Main Street across the river in the center of the village. New Hampshire Route 10 passes through the west side of the village, leading north 6 miles (10 km) to Keene and south 7 miles (11 km) to Winchester.

    According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the West Swanzey CDP has a total area of 2.55 square miles (6.61 km2), of which 2.53 square miles (6.56 km2) are land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2), or 0.72%, are water.[1]

    As of the census of 2010, there were 1,308 people, 581 households, and 340 families residing in the CDP. There were 617 housing units, of which 36, or 5.8%, were vacant. The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.2% white, 0.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.4% Asian, 0.0% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.2% some other race, and 1.2% two or more races. 1.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.[2]

    Swanzey is a town in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,230 at the 2010 census.[2] In addition to the town center, Swanzey includes the villages of East Swanzey, West Swanzey, North Swanzey, and Westport.

    First granted in 1733 as Lower Ashuelot, Swanzey was one of the fort towns established by Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts, which then claimed the territory. The town was the site of many battles during King George's War, and in 1747 was abandoned for three years. It was regranted to 62 proprietors on July 2, 1753 by Governor Benning Wentworth as Swanzey, most probably because some early settlers had a connection to Swansea in Wales.[3] Situated on the Ashuelot River and connected by the Ashuelot Railroad, West Swanzey developed as a textile mill town, and East Swanzey produced wooden buckets for generations. By 1859, the population was 2,106.[4]

    The town features four covered bridges, and was the home of theatrical trouper Denman Thompson, who gained a national reputation by his portrayal of the Yankee farmer, "Joshua Whitcomb", star of his stage play The Old Homestead. Residents restage Thompson's melodrama every summer at a natural outdoor amphitheater called the Potash Bowl.[5]

    Because he vacationed in Swanzey during several summers, the town has claimed to be the location of a tree that inspired poet Joyce Kilmer (1886–1918) to write the popular 1913 poem "Trees". However, family accounts and documents establish that the poem was written in Mahwah, New Jersey.[6][7][8]

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.9 square miles (95.6 km2), of which 35.9 sq mi (93.0 km2) is land and 1.0 sq mi (2.6 km2), or 2.71%, is water. Westmoreland is bounded on the west by the Connecticut River. The town is home to Hemenway State Forest in the north and White Lake State Park in the southeast.

    Granted in 1766 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, this town was named in honor of his close friend, British Admiral Washington Shirley, Viscount Tamworth. The admiral's daughter, Selina Shirley, was instrumental in the founding of Dartmouth College. The village of Whittier, like Mount Whittier in Ossipee, is named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier.

    The Chinook Kennels here raised sled dogs for the Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd Antarctic expeditions and the Army's search-and-rescue units. The Barnstormers Theatre summer playhouse was established here in 1931 by Francis Grover Cleveland, son of President Grover Cleveland. He supported the theatre until his death in 1995. Barnstormers is hailed as the oldest continuously running professional theatre in the state.

    In 1921, at the turn of the 20th century many people travelled to the White Mountains of New Hampshire seeking haven from the noise of the cities and the business of urban life. Others believe the name originated from earlier references to the snowy white fields one would see upon approach through any of the surrounding mountain passages. The chartered name was "Whitefields", but the "s" was dropped on December 1, 1804—the date of incorporation. Early grantees included Jeremy Belknap, historian, and John Langdon, who succeeded John Wentworth as governor.
