Afterward, paperwork has to be correctly filled out in order to track the sample from the point of collection through the laboratory testing process. The simplest answer is wherever there are patients. Their work places are numerous and diverse, including Bridgeport CA medical clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, or blood banks. They can be tasked to collect blood samples from patients of all ages, from babies or toddlers to seniors. A number of phlebotomists, based on their training and their practice, specialize in collecting blood from a certain type of patient. For instance, those practicing in an assisted living facility or nursing home would only be drawing blood from elderly patients. If they are working in a maternity ward, they would be collecting blood from mothers and newborns exclusively. On the other hand, phlebotomy technicians practicing in a general hospital setting would be drawing blood from a wide range of patients and would collect samples from different patients on a daily basis.

The certificate program generally takes less than a year to finish and provides a general education along with the training on how to draw blood. Offered at junior and community colleges, they typically take two years to finish. Bachelor’s Degrees are less available and as a 4 year program furnish a more comprehensive foundation in lab sciences. After you have completed your training, you will probably want to become certified. While not mandated in the majority of states, a number of employers require certification prior to employing technicians. Some of the principal certifying organizations include:

  • National Phlebotomy Association

Anything lower than these minimums may signify that the program is not comprehensive enough to furnish adequate training.

They are the ideal way to obtain hands-on practical training typically not obtainable on campus. As an added benefit, internships can assist students establish contacts within the local Bridgeport CA health care community. And they are a plus on resumes as well.

Is Job Placement Help Offered? Finding your first phlebotomy job will be much easier with the help of a job placement program. If a school has a high rate, meaning they place most of their students in jobs, it’s an indication that the school has both an excellent reputation as well as an extensive network of professional contacts within the Bridgeport CA healthcare community.

Are Classes Offered to Fit Your Schedule? Finally, it’s important to make sure that the final school you choose provides classes at times that will accommodate your active schedule. This is particularly important if you opt to still work while attending college. If you need to go to classes at night or on weekends near Bridgeport CA, check that they are available at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm it is an option also. And if you have decided to attend online, with the practical training requirement, make sure those hours can also be completed within your schedule. And find out what the make-up procedure is should you have to miss any classes because of emergencies or illness.
