Is the Phlebotomist Program State Specific? As previously mentioned, each state has its own requirements for practicing as a phlebotomist. Some states require certification, while some others mandate licensing. Therefore it’s very important to choose a phlebotomy program that fulfills the state specific requirements for New Mexico or the state where you will be working and preps you for any examinations you may have to take.

Is the School Accredited? The phlebotomist program and school you choose should be accredited by a reputable regional or national accrediting organization, such as the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). There are several benefits to graduating from an accredited program aside from an assurance of a quality education. To begin with, if your program has not received accreditation, you will not be able to sit for a certification exam administered by any of the earlier listed certifying agencies. Also, accreditation will help in obtaining financial aid or loans, which are typically not available for non-accredited schools in Ojo Caliente NM. Last, graduating from an accredited college can make you more attractive to potential employers in the job market.

What is the College’s Ranking? In many states there is little or no regulation of phlebotomist colleges, so there are those that are not of the highest quality. So along with accreditation, it’s imperative to investigate the reputations of all schools you are considering. You can research internet school reviews and rating services and ask the accrediting agencies for their reviews as well. You can also check with some Ojo Caliente NM local hospitals or clinics that you may have an interest in working for and see if they can provide any insights. As a closing thought, you can check with the New Mexico school licensing authority and ask if any grievances have been submitted or if the schools are in full compliance.

First, check with the New Mexico regulator or the state regulator where you will be working to find out if there are any minimum requirements for the length of training, both clinical and classroom. As a minimum, any Ojo Caliente NM phlebotomist program that you are looking at should provide at least 40 hours of classroom training (the majority require 120) and 120 hours of practical training. Anything below these minimums might indicate that the program is not expansive enough to furnish sufficient training.

Are Internship Programs Included? Ask the New Mexico programs you are reviewing if they have an internship program in partnership with regional healthcare facilities. They are the optimal means to get hands-on practical training often not available on campus. As an added benefit, internships can help students establish relationships within the local Ojo Caliente NM medical community. And they are a plus on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Support Provided? Getting your first phlebotomist job will be a lot easier with the assistance of a job placement program. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing offer assistance and what their job placement percentage is. If a college has a high rate, signifying they place most of their students in positions, it’s an indication that the college has both an excellent reputation as well as a large network of professional contacts within the Ojo Caliente NM medical community.

Are Class Times Compatible With Your Schedule? And last, it’s critical to verify that the final school you select provides classes at times that will accommodate your busy schedule. This is especially true if you decide to still work while going to college. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Ojo Caliente NM, check that they are offered at those times. Also, if you can only attend part-time, make sure it is an option also. And if you have decided to attend online, with the clinical training requirement, make certain those hours can also be fulfilled within your schedule. And find out what the make-up protocol is should you have to miss any classes as a result of emergencies or illness.
