Learn About Adna Washington

Adna, Washington

Adna is an unincorporated community located in Lewis County, Washington.[1] Due to its rural setting with little settlement concentration, it did not meet qualifications as a census-designated place, a program used by the U.S. Census Bureau for unincorporated communities. The community was originally known as Pomona.[citation needed]

Adna's current name was established in 1892 when the United Railroads of Washington branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company laid down railroad tracks through the area. Along with the arrival of the railroad came the building of a new post office which had yet to be named. URW engineer W. C. Marion chose the name "Edna" in honor of local resident Edna Browning, but the name was rejected by the U.S. Postal Service as there was, at the time, already a post office named Edna in Washington. The Postal Service changed the name from "Edna" to "Adna". [1]

Adna is located six miles (9.65 km) southwest of Chehalis. Adna is home to the Adna School District, which includes two schools: Adna Elementary and Adna Middle/High School.[2] One of the first schools to serve Adna was built in 1893 and was known as the Bell Tower School.

Adna has a grocery store, Adna Grocery, that also serves as a gas station, and movie rentals, and includes a post office in the same building. The post office's zip code is 98522.
